Dr. Martens, commonly referred to as "Docs" or "DMs," is a British footwear brand that has become an iconic symbol of youth subcultures and rebellion since its founding. The brand is renowned for its sturdy and distinctive boots, which feature a distinctive design with a thick rubber sole, yellow stitching, and a smooth leather upper. Dr. Martens boots are recognized worldwide and have been an integral part of various fashion movements over the years.
Dr. Martens was founded by German doctor Klaus Märtens during World War II. While recovering from a foot injury, Märtens designed a more comfortable and durable shoe with an air-cushioned sole, which provided better support and comfort than standard army-issue boots. In collaboration with a friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, he refined the design and launched the first pair of Dr. Martens boots in 1960.
Initially popular among working-class individuals for their comfort and durability, Dr. Martens boots gradually gained popularity among various subcultures and countercultural movements. In the 1970s, they became closely associated with the punk rock movement, and their rebellious image was further cemented during the 1980s when they became a symbol of youth culture and defiance against the mainstream.
Over the years, Dr. Martens has expanded its product line beyond the classic boots, offering various styles, colors, and materials to cater to a broader audience. The brand has introduced sandals, shoes, and other footwear, but the iconic boots remain at the core of their identity.
